Akita Breeders

The Akita is a unique dog, originating in Japan and enjoying growing popularity these days, so Akita Breeders around the world keep on contributing to further development of the breed. Today, there are two varieties: the Akita Inu – the Japanese version, and the American Akita, which is the only one officially recognized in the USA.

Akita is a working breed of dogs. In the past, it was used by Japanese nobilities in hunting large game, such as wild boar, deer and some bear species. Akitas possess a striking adaptability, much because of their dense double coat that provides sufficient protection against cold. Despite the fact that today the dog is not used for that purpose any more, Akita breeders continue to cultivate these features in their puppies.

Akita dogs, both Japanese and American, are highly intelligent and protective companions, appreciative of attention and absolutely intolerant of boredom and loneliness. Like any intelligent mind, theirs requires various sorts of stimulation from early on. These dogs are very fond of various activities and enjoy properly organized training sessions, which can be equally pleasing for the dog and the owner. However, all ethical Akita Breeders suggest that these dogs are not for everyone. They tend to be very possessive around food, territory and their loved ones, and if this gets out of hand, a dog can become a sheer trouble.

It is an absolute must for all Akita owners to teach their dogs to respect yourself and all members of your family. Akita dogs are notoriously eager to claim leadership, and this is the first and foremost thing for an Akita owner to bear in mind. Some behaviors, such as sleeping in bed with the owner or trying to pull something away from his or her hands, may look just like little cuties. Indeed, these may be manifestations of dominant behavior, which requires immediate control. This may not be a problem with a puppy, but you will hardly be able to hold a 110-pound adult dog pulling on the leash. A reputable and experienced Akita Breeder must warn every potential customer about this.

Akitas tend to be dog-aggressive and aloof with strangers. Improper socialization may also result in your dog showing suspiciousness even toward your family members, to say nothing of guests. Not infrequently, Akita dogs express dislike toward children. A well trained Akita will be good with your kids, but still may retain a grudge against alien children, which is likely to get you into a lot of trouble. To be on the safe side, do not permit children to play with your Akita without your attendance. Akita breeders should stress this point when familiarizing potential buyers with the breed.

As for their general appearance, Akita dogs are large, standing 25-28 inches tall at the withers and weighing 75-120 lbs. Akita Inu comes in several colors: Fawn, White, Brindle, Seasame and Red. American Akitas can also have other color permutations. These dogs have muscled bodies, heavy head with small pointed ears and almond-shaped eyes. Paws feature webbings, which contribute to the dog’s knack for swimming. The tail is curled over the back and held sideways. If you feel like it is high time for you to share your life with such a companion, take your time and find a conscientious and reputable Akita breeder.
