Akitas stand about 26-28 inches at the shoulder. Females are a bit smaller, and measure 24-26 inches. Akita dogs are intelligent and responsive to training. The breed is very independent, and tends to be dominant over other dogs. The Akita dog needs an owner who will be a leader.

Akitas are popular working dogs. Their exceptional personality traits and physical characteristics make them a rather famous breed. Akitas come in two types: the American Akita and the Japanese Akita dog. The Japanese Akita is smaller in size, and has a somewhat different head shape.
