Akitas are popular working dogs that are famous due to their personality traits and physical characteristics. There are two types of Akitas. They are the American Akita and the Japanese Akita. The dogs differ in appearance and are judged with different criteria in mind. Thus, the Japanese type Akita is smaller in size and has a different head shape. There are some restrictions as to the coat color. Unlike the American type Akita, it cannot have a black mask on the muzzle. It is agreed that interbreeding of these two types should be avoided.
The Akita Club of America has produced the breed standard that was later accepted by the AKC. The AKC breed standard is an ideal picture of the American type Akita adhered to by breeders and breed organizations.
Akitas - Appearance
The Akita is a squarely built dog. The most prominent breed characteristics are its erect ears, dark almond-shaped eyes, and a curved tail. The dog owes its strength and endurance to a heavy bone structure and much substance. The head is massive, yet is in good proportion to the body. The skull is flat and broad. Akitas have a scissors bite; yet a level bite is not considered a fault. The muscular neck is relatively short. Akitas are double-coated dogs. They have a short, dense undercoat and straight medium-sized outer coat. The dogs may come in a variety of colors.

Height: Akitas stand about 26-28 inches at the shoulder with females being 24-26 inches.
Akitas - Weight:
75-120 pounds.
Akitas - Temperament
The dog is intelligent and responsive. It will obey only consistent training. The owners of Akitas state that the dog often seems to be aloof. Indeed, the breed is very independent and tends to be dominant over other dogs. Training is highly recommended for Akitas. It should be kept it mind that they do not bear harsh methods.
The Akita is a very devoted dog. Japanese breed fanciers built a monument to a dog that displayed utter devotion to its owner. Every morning it saw the owner off the train and came back in the evening to meet him at the station. After his death, the dog continued to come to the station every day and wait there for the owner. The monument to the dog commemorates devotion of all Akitas and is a tribute to their wonderful personality traits.
