Since Akitas became very popular in the United States, breed fanciers decided to organize clubs and associations to promote the breed and unite their efforts for the preservation of the dog. Despite the fact that they had this sole purpose on their mind, they were not eager to be administered by one club only. Hence, individual groups established separate breed clubs and associations, which delayed acceptance by the AKC.
The Akita Dog Association of America was formed in 1955. The members of the association stood guard for the breed and were not willing to accept every Akita owner who claimed to be devoted to the breed. The difficulty of acquiring Akita Dog Association of America membership resulted in forming another breed club. The Akita Kennel Club that later started to be called the Akita Club of America was established in 1956. A few other breed organizations appeared in the subsequent years.
No sooner than in the 1969 did the Akita Club of America become the National breed club for the dog. This was a long-awaited event that allowed the AKC to fully recognize the breed in 1973. Nowadays, the ACA (Akita Club of America) is associated with the AKC. The ACA members strive to conform to the official AKC standard and encourage breeding and maintaining purebred Akitas. Educating the public about Akitas and perfecting the dog's inborn qualities by the means of uncovering the best breed representatives for the breeding stock is one of the main ACA objectives.
